About the author

  • Salam-o-alaikum br. Suhaib,

It will be 2am my time :-) I'd love to attend. Are you planning to re-??-cast it or do a recording something for simpletons like us sitting far away?

    JazakAllah, wa-sallam.

  • asalaamualaykum,

I like the idea of the 1st essay. InshAllah, I will do it even though it is not obligatory for registration. I would like to make a suggestion, although I am sure it will be unpopular: Can we have an assignment each week? I know I would benefit a lot from it myself.

  • AA
Are there a certain number of places allocated for this, so that if i register i prevent someone else from being able to register?

  • This a great idea and I commend Shyakh Suhaib for taking the time to do this but there seems a lack of information about this. Specifically:

Do you have to register to listen to class and WHY do you have to register?

How long will these class last? From April 4th until??

Will classes be archived so people who missed the classes can hear them at their leisure?

  • 1. Yes you have to register so we can send you the login details and know the geographic data of where people are taking the class from.

    2. Don't know.

    3. Yes they will be inshaAllah.

  • Yo Zubair Khan, nice job on the work for setting this all up. I know its annoying to deal with PHP and MySQL sometimes.

  • Assalam Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

The Prophet sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam said, (three times), “The Religion is naseehah (sincere advice).” We said, “To whom?” He said, “To Allaah, His Book, His Messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and the general people.” – related by Muslim.

So here is my sincere advice to brother Suhaib and to all the brother and sisters who are eager to learn the Deen for the sake of Allah subhanahu wata'ala. Whether people accept my advice or not, I have fulfilled my duty, walhamdulilah.

Imam Muhammad Ibn Seereen said: 'Indeed, this knowledge Is Deen, So Look To The One You Take Your Deen From'

Before we all start learning and acquiring this knowledge which involves our Deen, let us ask Who is the author, and let us look at the one that we will be taking our Deen from.

This book, Risalah al-Mustarshideen, was written by Imam al- Harith al- Muhasibi who was around at the time of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, about 200 years after the time of the Prophet Muhammad salalahu alyhi wasalam.

Back then, Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal prohibited the people from sitting with al- Muhasabi and from learning knowledge from him.

So now we need to ask ourselves, should we be learning and taking knowledge from a book that was written by some one whom Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal forbade the people to take knowledge from?

{And continue to remind, for surely the reminder benefits the believers} (51.55)

  • Asalamu alaykum, Dear Abdullah:

The incident you are referring to was related by al-Khatib, Ibn al-Jawzi and Ibn Kathir [see al-Bidayah wa al-Nihaya vol. vol. 10 pg. 33. as well as Sayid al-Khatir pg. 100]

It states that when the great Imam went with his student Ibn Ishaq al-Siraj. The Imam listened to the words of al-Muhasibi and, as noted by al-Khatib with a sound isnad, was moved to tears saying “I have never seen a people like these. And I've never seen a man articulating the 'ilm al-Haqaiq like this man.” Tarikh of al-Khatib vol. 8 pg. 214

However, he adviced Ibn Siraj not to attend this dars and About this the scholars have three opinions:

    1. al-Muhassbi waded into a form of Kalam that Ahmed found repugnant [however, as Ibn Taymmiyah noted, the former repented]
    2. Ahmed feared that it might draw his student away from learning the Book and the Sunna
    3. The Zuhd of al-Muhassibi would be to great for Ibn Siraj to handle

    The first contention

al-Muhasibi delved into some issues of Kalam which angered Ahmed. This was noted by Ibn Rajab in Jam'i al-Ulom wa al-Hikam under the hadith Istafti Qalbak as well as Imam Ibn Kathir and al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah vol. 10 pg. 330. However, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah states that al-Muhasibi “repented and “his fame and virtue spread.” [see Sharh al-Kawakib al-Muni] of al-Futuhi vol. pg. 107

This book is dealing with suluk and akhlaq. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah noted that Imam Ahmed's anger with Muhasibi was not related to his works in the former, but in some areas of Kalam. [See Mamu' al-Fatawa vol. 12 pgs 363-377.] However, as was noted above, al-Muhassibi repented from those things thus Ibn Taymiyyah quoted from him extensively in al-Risalah al-Tadmiriyah pg. 204 as well as al-Fatwa al-Hamawiyah al-Kubra pg. 277.

    The Second Contention

As for the contention that he warned his students not to sit with him, then the texts I’ve come across do not support that claim. He said, “In my opinion.” This in itself is not enough to discredit al-Muhassibi because Ahmed discouraged his students from taking from the book of the great Imam’s like Abu Thur, Abi ‘Ubayd, Malik, Ibn Rahwiyah, Sufyan al-Thawri and al-Shaf’I saying, “Take the Athar.” And, when he was told that the scholar of Hadith were writing the works of Shafi he said, “I don’t agree with this.” In fact, it is well known that he refused to allow other to write his own words! See Ibn Jawzi’s al-Munaqab of Imam Ahmed vol chapters 28-29 pg(s) 249-251. This was due to his strong belief in focusing on the Qur’an and Sunna as well as the Usol. Now, based on that are we going to reject those great Imams, stop teaching their books and warn others not to listen to their words?

As for point three it was articulated by Sh. Abu Ghuda [ra].

Finally, we should not make disagreements amongst the Salaf as a means for al-Jarh alone. If that was the case, we would reject, depending on which side one took Sufyan al-Thawri and Abu Hanifa, Malik and Ibn Abi Daib and Ahmed bin Salih and al-Nasai since they all had strong words for each other?

    On al-Muhasibi:

Imam al-Dhahabi, “Al-Muhassibi; the knower of Allah, the writer, truthful, he was criticized for some areas of his tasawuf and his writings.” See Lisan al-‘Itidal vol. 1 pg(s). 199-200

al-Shattibi, “Al-Harith al-Muhasbi from the great Sufis who were taken as examples to follow” Al-‘Itisam vol. 1 pg. 284

Ibn Hajar, “al-Harith al-Muhasibi is from the scholars of Hadith and Kalam.” See his Nukatah on Ibn Salah’s work vol. 2 pg. 584

Finally akhi, I warn you about the flesh of the scholars and causing unfounded trouble in the community. You threw something out at al-Muhassibi without proof, or discussion to your claim? While the right of Nasiha is our right upon you, our main right is that you do so with sound knowledge and clarity and insaf.

With that, I leave you with the wise words of al-Subki [ra] who said,

“An intelligent student of mine remains as such until he delves into the differences that occurred between the salaf.” After warning the student to avoid the differences that occurred between the great scholars he says, “Like (what occurred) between Ahmad and al Muhassibi…for, indeed, if you buys yourself with these things, I fear for your demise…there is nothing for us except to be pleased with them, being quiet about their differences, just as they were about the differences amongst the Companions [ra].” Tabaqat al-Shaf’iyah vol. 2 pg. 39

    May Allah grant us insaf

  • Alhumdulillah, I registered again….whew! Glad I saw that. Question: If for some reason I am unable to listen to it with quality (my kids are loud….my wife is in a Halaqa during this time frame), can I listen to it again in a recorded format?

  • Assalamu 'Alaikum,

Brother Zubair, I have registered for the second time. But now I am a bit in a confusion regarding the registration was complete or not . Can you assure me please.

    Asif Shibgat Bhuiyan from Bangladesh.

  • Assalamualaikum,
Is there a process for husband/wife to register as family, or should only one of them register? JazakAllah Khair.

  • As salamu alaikum Zubair,

Thanks for the reply. I was assuming that we needed the confirmation to access the site for the lecture. There is nothing in my spam folder. If needed I can register again.

  • lol. Brother Zubair u must be having tough time with all the issues. But may Allah reward you beside Shaykh Suhaib.

  • assalamu `alaykum,

Can we use the version of the book translated by Shaykh Sadullah Khan and Shaykh Yassir Fazaga?

It looks like the same book, and I would prefer to use Shaykh Sadullah's version (since I have easy access to him to ask questions). This is the book where Shaykh Suhaib did the foreword.

    jazakum Allahu khayran.

  • Okay alhamdulillah, just heard back from the organizers that we CAN use Shaykh Sadullah's book. SoCal folks, the book is still available for purchase at ICOI and OCIF. You can also purchase it online at the link above (it's the cheaper version too!) :)

  • Assalamu `alaykum,

Are you guys doing a live video feed? ICOI (masjid) is thinking of hosting the class every week and advertising it to our people but we need to know if its just audio or video as well.

Jazaks. Please let me know asap!

  • Salaam u alaikum wa rahmatullah,

This is just some advice to first myself and all those who are reading this is that many times, due to our illiteracy, ignorance and unsound understanding of the islamic text, we may read another bro/sis comment and be startled by it and not perhaps enjoin in what may be good for us and completely avoid it, which may be Shaytan's tool in order to stray away as many as he can.

So, whenever your reading something, don't immediately go to the comments just to see what people have to say about it, you would be wasting your precious time trying to read 20, 30 or even 40 comments at a time for one article…and if you are still going to, just skip to the Sheikhs comments because you know he's going to drop that knowledge on you for your advancement in your relationship to your Creator. Jazakullah khair for clearing up the Imam al-Muhasibi's rep, may Allah clear up your reputation one day when you won't be around and most importantly on the Day of Judgement.

    Salaam u alaikum wa rahmatullah

  • Asalam Alaykum,

Does anyone know where to buy the original transcript in Egypt? Jazakallah khayran brothers and sisters, I pray we all benefit from this class inshallah.

  • SubhanAllah, I thought I registered, but just found the email w/the link in my spam folder! :(

Qaddar Allah wa ma shaa a fa'al. Alhamdulillah I saw the email that said it was going to be posted here so I'm waiting for it, insha'Allah.

  • Salam,

Unfortunately I missed the first class, but Jazak Allahu Khair to Imam Suhaib for putting up the notes. Very useful masha Allah.

I am trying to download the audio version but are you aware that the link is not working to download the audio file.

Please fix it so that the file can be downloaded.

    Was Salam

    Jashim (London)

  • Jashim…assallamu alykum.

If you right click on the word “download” and choose “save link asl you'll be able to download the entire file.

I was able to download both the lecture and the Q&A that way.

  • Is this still going on? I received an email confirmation a few times in the past few months, but whenever I log in, it says that the speaker has not yet arrived…

    • Assalamu alaykum MW_N,

Unfortunately we haven’t had class after the 6th session. We are planning on resuming in the future and we will keep everyone updated via this website. Sorry for the false notifications.
