In fact, this is our problem today. We got the Salafi influence and the resulting “voting is haram,” fatwas from sheikhs no one has ever heard of. But on the other hand, we have to be clear and articulate as Muslims when we address the outside world. I can only state my uninformed opinion, but I get this from my local Imams.
1) There are bad Muslims. To say the members of ISIS are not Muslims is extreme. They believe in the Shahada. Clearly though, they are bad people; bad Muslims and it is our duty to speak out against injustice.
2) There are are a lot of groups out there pretending to be Muslim and thus they lie on us and our faith. I am in rebellion in a way. The only hate I have is for Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. Farrakhan knows better. He was there when Warith Deen Muhammad converted the pagan Nation into true Islam back in the late 70s. Yet he continues on with this nonsense about black gods and worshiping a picture on a wall. He uses Islam to justify his racist Nazi views and resorts to double talk when confronted on his lies. He only hurts blacks who don’t know better. He is taking advantage of illiterate black people. So for me, from a cultural place, I see it as my duty to speak out against him. He lies on Allah and his messenger and he does it to exploit black Americans. The Ahmadiyya are similar in their false claims about being Muslims. They lie and say they are “peaceful Muslims,” instead of simply saying they like our book and our Prophet, but their source is Ahmed Ghullam. Violence against them is something I would never do or encourage, but the hate Muslims have for them is their dishonesty and this needs to be said more.

To attack the Shia, is what is holding us back as Muslims and I know that not all Salafis are intolerant, but a part of our duty as Muslims is to stand up for truth and justice. If I see a brother at the mosque, I don’t do a mini inquisition on every brother I meet (“what masjid do you attend brother? Where are you from?). If I see a NOI dude at the mosque, I make it a point to be nice as I can to him and I never refuse to stand next to someone in Salah (the transexual thing is going to drive us all nuts). But Farrakhan killed Malcolm. He exploits blacks and lies on Islam and it wrong that we don’t speak against him because of his race. He is an American Nazi who lies on Islam and to say nothing while evil is working is not an Islam I can ever be very good at.

Insha Allah, I will work more on being a better Muslim. Allah knows, I am far from perfect and not very literate about Allah’s book and His messenger. Glory be to Him. Peace and blessings be upon His messenger.

Can this verse be interpreted as “There shall be no compulsion in the religion,” meaning not conversion but simply in the practices/beliefs of the religion itself? If not, why not?

I appreciate the statement quote ” in the end, it is facts, and not tabloid and gutter journalism, that establishes the positive and beneficial role of Muslims in the west”
Sure we should not let PostModernism (which is now a defunct philosophical view)interpret Islamic theology and philosophy within its framework. Rather use the historical tools and knowledge of the tradtion as stated by Andrew but for that I think we need well groomed muslim scholars in west.
