Salaams. While the articles are good points about interest they do nothing to answer practical questions. Even some parts are wrong. For example, First: The taking of interest implies appropriating another person’s property without giving him anything in exchange, because one who lends one dirham for two dirhams gets the extra dirham for nothing. This is complete fallacy and erroneous. The extra dirham compensates for the loss of the one dirham during the time period of the loan and inflation. Moving on, any sort of "Islamic" financing has to answer some basic practical questions. I have a list of some questions here: http://mezba.blogspot.com/2010/10/questions-about-islamic-financing.html and others may also have valid points, but no discussion of Islamic prohibition of interest can dance around those practical points.

I just re-read the entire piece again, and all I can say is MashaAllah. I think a case can also be made (and the author does briefly mention it) that the institutionalization of interest and the consequent rapid economic development of the West has resulted in the environmental catastrophe that we find ourselves facing today.

At the bottom of all this is simply the fact that the capitalist economy institutionalizes greed. And greed is deadly for all of us. May Allah protect us all.

I agree with all you said… But no real solution is offered… Talking about the problem is all fine and dandy but most muslims are interest is bad and would love to get rid of it… But we can’t… how can when you despotic leaders care more about themselves than there people. In the West or East. I see no leader that is truly honest and working toward a peace for his people. The rich people, corporations, and politicians have amalgamated into one forceful group.

All we can do is pray… There is nothing else left.

With all due respect to this website, I think this piece deserves a wider audience! I’m currently doing a class on global political economy, so I find this really fascinating.
