Just so people know, this hadeeth is found in books other than Bukhari. Additionally, it is found with another chain other than Hisham ibn Ammar, which is the chain of Bishr bin Bakr. I am talking about the wording "there will be from my ummah...". This is why the main discussion is actually on a shared narrator by the two chains which is Attiyah ibn Qays, as well as this hadeeth's comparison with hadeeths within the same context, namely the one on drinking alcohol and naming it by another name, attributed to the same companion.

It should also be known that Abu Haneefa is reported as having, permitted, though with dislike, the selling of musical instruments. His two students differed with him on this as they saw no benefit in it and because it was [typically] prepared for sin.

salam Imam, just wanted to thank you for this. as a child, i fell in love with guitar at a very young age, it was like i born for the instrument - hard to explain this into words and i dont want to go into much more detail here.

but people around me telling me it was haraam was very difficult and caused me a lot of grief and anxiety in my heart. i felt like there was something wrong with me.

music can be a potent drug, and i agree one must be careful. but there are times when it has been very soothing for me and it is that sort of music im most attracted to.

i dont make haram music or anything, its all mainly guitar and instrumental, and if there's singing its songs about life or positive things or as a form of a 'therapy' of sorts.

thanks for posting this, i can know i can feel not so naturally guilty about myself long as im not using it in a bad way and in a positive way.

Assalaamu alaykum
For me this first portion was most confusing.....
"It is quite true that—historically—the prevalent (جمهور) opinion in Islamic jurisprudence regarding the use of and listening to musical instruments is that of prohibition (حرام). It is the official opinion of the four schools of thought, although various scholars from different schools held it is only disliked (مكروه) and many others deemed it permissible with the condition that the song is not immoral. It is not true that there is a consensus on it or that the opinion of permissibility is a strange opinion, which is a divergence from clear teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah."
If جمهور means consensus and the 4 mazaahib had it in this issue, how is it possible to say a few lines down that" it is not true that there is a consensus on it....
Also, not one on the list of scholars mentioned who agreed with its permissability are from the immediate time or a student of the Aimmah(the four imaams)..... Please correct me if i am wrong

Can you imagine a person engaged in memorizing, repeating the verses throughout the day, reflecting on the meaning of Allah’s words, then taking a break from this beautiful process to listen to music? The two don’t go together.

Hassen with respect what you have said here is just your opinion it is not a fact. To me it is perfectly reasonable for a person to study Qur'an and then listen to music, just as you may take a break and watch a football match or go for a run or bake a cake. You are viewing music as something negative and imagining someone listening to something horrible, but there are many songs with beautiful words and meanings, or perhaps you may like to sit outside and appreciate Allah's creation while listening to some relaxing classical music, and think about what you have learnt in your studies of the Qur'an. It doesn't have to be something negative.

The Prophet sallALLAHU 'alaihi wa sallam said the knowledge would be taken up from among his people and this thread proves it like nothing I've witnessed in recent memory.

"Preachers will abound like butterflies." Do you all really imagine this kind of nonsense is what ALLAH wants from you, o faithful ones?

David (Dawud) 'alaihis-salaam played music.

The discussion was quite good. Imam yahya presented a good topic but for me it was not a convincing evidence for permissibility. I also appreciate the brothers who clearly pointed out some commentators who were ''munkaril-ahadeeth''. May allah guide us to truth ( ameen).

Asalamualaikum

I usee to love listening to music even when I knew deep inside that what I was doing was wrong. I was born Muslim but was not such a practicing one. Until 8 years ago I was sort of a rebeL and even contemplating leaving Islam And change my name even. until a year ago I was not really into Islam although I was praying 4 times a day and doing qaza fajr (Even when I was a rebel I had always fasted all days of Ramadan so no change here). so during this time I really got into Islam by reading a ton of sites forums articles some quran tafsir and ahadith. ..and watching lots and lots of videos of speakers like dr zakir naik, abdur raheem green, shaikh ahmed deedat, yusuf estes, and others. ...Masha Allah during this time I slowly slowly cut down on music and movies...

What changed ..during ramadan the tv is off the whole month. No music is played. ramadan used to be very difficult for me because of this. During ramadan to make up the loss of music I would listen to naath and nasheed without music even those in arabic. I thought...what I can do without in Ramadan I can surely do without period...Allahamdulilah I have cut down so much that it feels wrong to listen. I occasionally watch a movie making sure that all non-essential music is muted songs forwarded. I used to watch many movies a month...last movie I saw was about two months ago and only because it had relgion as the main topic was controversial and was talkbof everyone..

Anyway. I dont know whether others stop listening to music in Ramadan but if they do I ask WHY...what is prohibited or not desired in Ramadan should be prohibited or not desired at all...

The main point everyone is missing is it should be your choice to listen or not to listen to music.
There is no argument or question between muslim leaders that everyone will be judges for their own actions, so forcing someone not to listen or to listen to music will only be hurting you.
