this is some good stuff and touches upon some really common issues that most of us identify with at some point in our life. i remember when i first came/semi-reverted (long story) to the deen, i got bombarded with all of these things; “be a something-fi something-ist” and i was like i just wanna be a muslim! i’m all for the deen is naseeha, but i’m all for the deen is a personal journey too.

Just wanted to comment on the part where you said.

Yes brother its true and sad that, unfortunately some of our Muslim brothers & sisters might think to befriend a none Muslim might be dangerous. Which is actually wrong for them to think that way cause, we all know there are good none Muslims out there as well as good Muslims at the same time there are bad none Muslims and bad muslim too.

So when someone says this we should ask him or her how?

Most probably, they will tell you about them being involved in things that are haram to us but halal to them, which might end up affecting us in some ways.

But then again don’t some of our own Muslim brothers and sisters do things that are haram ? If yes, shouldn’t we stay away from them too?

Take an example: If someone has two friends #1 is a Muslim who is alcoholic, and # 2 is none Muslim who abstains from alcohol. If friend # 1 asked, you to go hang out with him or her while you know for sure they will be drinking and friend # 2 asked you to go out with them and you know for sure, there will be no drinking. Who will you choose to go out with?

Islam asks us to look at the person’s character, whether it is a Muslim or none Muslim and see if by any chance they could be of bad influence and if yes, then we should stay away from them and if no, then there is no harm in befriending them (at least thats the Islam I know).Take another example what’s difference is there in playing tennis with a none muslim or muslim when we all know at the end of the day all you did is play tennis.

You described a very real scenario. I’m Pakistani/El Salvadorean born and raised in Los Angeles. My father immigrated during the 70s, married a Non-Muslim and is now dealing with the problems of raising two very “American/Westernized” daughters, and doesn’t understand why they’re not in masjid durng Ramazan, or can’t read Quran. It’s sad. 🙁
