Jazak Allah khair for mentioning this point. Islam does not condone abuse in any form and we are not supposed to tolerate it.

In this story it is clear that the husband is a caring, loving man who makes a few mistakes as does the wife. In that case, apologies and avoiding being self-centered and self-obsessed works.
