When the Ummayads ruled Spain, many Jews rose to prominent positions. Some were physicians, poets, and merchants. They wrote extensively in Arabic and there was rich cultural dialogue between Muslims and Jews. When Jews moved to lands where Christians reigned, they were often persecuted, although some did reach positions of prosperity. The Crusades were an especially dark time for Jews who were so terrified by Christian armies that mothers killed their own children to protect them from torture by the Crusaders.
