In the ayah that was quoted above Nuh says “أني مغلوب فانتصر”. According to tafseer sa’di this was referring to the “lack of power he had to become victorious and bring his people back to the truth because only a few people from his qawm had believed.” The word “مغلوب” actually means to be defeated or overcome.

However you mad a good point! He was victorious in the end because of the victory Allah granted Him. Similarly, even when we feel ‘defeated’ in this life, we too still can be victorious by the will of Allah–if not in this life, then the next–as long as we turn to Allah as Nuh alayhisalam did (and that was exactly the point of this piece! 🙂 )

I don’t think defeat would be quite the word to describe Nuh (AS) state but it should be “saddened” because though he couldn’t be a means by which Allah could have guided a majority of his people, he still was victorious because he was amongst those who are near to Allah and will be raised amongst the best of creation, Muhammad SAW.
