to clarify: what i mean is, a woman of past 20 who does not have children and with frequent geographical separation with her husband, does not have any peers in a muslim community. there’s no one to talk to who has anything to talk about aside from their children (though quite understandably they do take up a lot of time).

we’d normally think of ‘poverty’ and ‘worldly gain’ in terms of wealth and possessions, but i realise now that it probably covers *all* worldly gain, including family life and children. perhaps i had been too worried about marrying and being able to settle into a family at the optimum age, that i no longer sought it for Allah. indeed, for people like i was then, the fear of loneliness and barren childlessness, of being too late to have children, dominates – and isn’t this a form of poverty, always before your eyes? when perhaps if i were steadfast, i would accept children are Allah’s gifts to give or withhold as He pleases, and either case is good for a Muslim, because either way i should have a mindset of abundance as befits a Muslim.

Allah knows whether it is provisioned for me, but I’m glad that I had to learn to let those things go. It was indeed in the way between me and my Lord. My revelation, however, sadly makes me fit in a lot less with my community. I had few things in common with most to begin with, now with this added on, excepting my close family, I have nothing whatsoever in common with nearly everyone I know, except (ironically) a few non-Muslim friends. but i shall persevere.
