Today during the khutba the congregation was given the following gem of a hadith: the words that get us closest to Allah are the words recited from the Qur’an. The ones who are too busy reading the Quran to make dua for things will receive far more than they could ever think to ask for.

i would like to add something that may not be apparent to minority muslims. hajj releases the attachment you have to your own particular homeland, nation, culture, language, basically – home soil. a LOT of people are overly attached to this. the fact that muslims have to at least admit that they will have to go to hajj if they can, leaves a door open in our minds that at some point we’re going to have to leave home and deal with “others”, and for the hosts, that they will have to accept pilgrims who are “others”.
