I can’t think of a reason why it would be haram. But, I am no scholar. Basically ask this to yourself. Is there clear proof or a clear logical reason for it to be considered haram? Remember everything is halal unless it can be proven to be haram. So the burden of proof is always on the one saying something is forbidden.

You are a man, and you are speaking purely from a theoretical perspective. Of course in theory you are absolutely right. But that does not change the reality that actually there often will be a lot of subtle *cultural* pressure for a woman to speak up less, to look down more, to stop doing various activities and hobbies, to perhaps not go out as much, etc. all in the name of piety and modesty. Because *certain* dominant cultures in *certain* Muslim communities, have as a norm, a cultural expectation for women to do not very much, exercise not very much authority and autonomy, and to live as an attachment to the men in their lives rather than as an independent and equal soul. The article is saying, that is not the same as Islam, which admits more leeway than that.
