I never read the book, wonder if the boy was ever appreciative of his friend, the tree, or if the tree is the only party that is displaying good character in the story?

On a separate note, it does illustrate the different ways interactive programs and reading stories educate us (I had both, intensively, growing up). The former hones specific skills from manual co-ordination, math, language, and strategy. The latter trains you to reflect and form opinions – on how to live, on different behaviours, on looking ahead to how people changes across their lives, etc.
