As Salamu Alaikum,

This article really made me reflect: Alhamdhulillah, we are indeed blessed with great quantities of food here in the US, but the quality of most of this food is very poor.

As Sr. Shabaana says animals are grown in terrible conditions. They are also fed hormones, antibiotics, unnatural diets that are haram (cows fed ground up meat, corn, etc?). Fruits and veggies are full of pesticides. A lot of it is GMO. Everything else is full of dangerous chemicals.

Quality food is more expensive, and, sometimes not even available. Ie, trying to find local and organic food is a challenge. Organic and halal meat is very difficult - for most, organic, halal and local meat is not a possibility. And what about raw milk (unpasteurized/unhomogenized milk -milk the way the Prophet (s) and his companions drank it?) in many states, its illegal!

I don't think this a coincidence. We gorge ourselves without thought, ignoring Allah's commands to eat Quality (Tayyib) and halal food: in response, perhaps Allah has removed the blessing from our food. Much of what we eat today does not really nourish us, and a lot of it is making us sick.

In the past year or so, Ramadhan has become easier for me in terms of the hunger and thirst. Of course, that just means I'm now up for more challenging trials beyond the merely physical, but the point is, the combination of these developments somehow has the effect of lessening my desire for eating - which is saying a lot, since Malaysians love love love food. It's pervasive in the culture. It's not that I don't enjoy food anymore, it's more that I've become more indifferent to the 'need' to enjoy it all the time.

What then happened is that I now eat somewhat less overall than I used to, and I'm far less picky over whether there's meat in the meal or not. And I'm perfectly ok with that. Of course it does mean I can be more judicious about where I buy food from.

I'm lucky in that I have the means to financially support the tiny ethical efforts available in the market here through my purchasing choices. Nonetheless, I think as with anything ethical - like charity, for example - if you're going to do it "one day when you can afford to" you must start today, when you can't. Meaning to say, you have to start with what little you can do, whether occassional purchases you can afford, or spreading awareness, or supporting legislation etc.. Otherwise, even when someday you can afford to, you will not. Because good deeds are primarily enabled by the heart and not by your means.

Salam. Thank you so much for sharing this article with us. These are the exact reasons why I stopped eating meat a few years ago (not that I think that we "have to be" vegetarians). I have a hard time sharing my conviction with others however, and you really expressed the key issues so eloquently. I will definitely be sharing this article with others :) Ba'raka Allahu Laka

Salaam. Jazakallahi khair for your thought provoking article. It is perhaps not a surprise that since Muslims in authority treat their people with contempt in various parts of the world and care only for their economic productivity, that animals are mistreated too. We don't seem to appreciate life at all, be it human or animal. This is despite preservation of life being one of the principle aims of Shariah.

ASA. ...I had a disturbing experience one Idhul Adha here in the USA at a urban slaughter house doing the zabiha .The demand is always high at that time and the facility did a poor job of isolating the animals from their ultimate end . The air in and around the facility smelled of blood and death; animals ( sheep, goats, cow's) could hear and smell each other being slaughtered.Yes it was Halal but not "Tayyib" . It gave me serious pause from that day. Taking a life of another living creation is not to be taken lightly for it wants to live, no matter on what end of the feed chain it is.
Yes let's eat less animal protein and practice the Tayyib part of the halal more! !! May Allah forgive us for our wrongdoing.

This article and the author always reminds me of our need to re-evaluate our views towards poultry. I think the 'fast food culture' has permeated into our daily lives where we want things which are cheap without consideration of where they come from. The author has strong convictions in the ethics of halal meat and I pray I gain the courage to take a similar stand.
