Don’t be disheartened. Probably we are near the end days. I am a born muslim and I did what I am not supposed to. But I am going back to the roots. And I believe there are many people like me. And people like you, who are in my opinion, far better to the Path of Allah.

I understand now why my beloved Prophet (saw) said these:

‘From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful…..’ (Sahih Bukhari)

Islam began as something strange and will revert to being strange as it began, so give glad tidings to the strangers.”

It made my life easy to understand why muslims are doing things that they are not supposed to,

This reminded me of the dua’ of the Prophet sallallhu alaihi wasallam:

” O Allah, suffice me with what is lawful so that I have no need for the unlawful and free me from having to depend on anyone other than you.”
Indeed He is the Provider, the Benefactor….

As salaam alaykum, brother.

I am from the South, as in the southern part of the US to the East of the Mississippi River.

Certainly in my city (where your dreadlocks would be largely welcomed) not “everyone” smokes weed. Many do, almost certainly including a fair number who would self identify as Muslim. I’m just gonna say that if “everyone” a person knows smokes weed, maybe that person needs to meet some new people.

The image of a successful Islamic society is tremendously appealing, and then next to it, we have to remember the realities that have happened in countries that have tried and are trying to implement such a vision – where there are sometimes massive failures such as women and girls denied healthcare and education. Certainly this is not true in every Islamic society, but we all know there are places where it has been and sadly is the case.

But I appreciate, very much having the ideal held up for contemplation. Jazak Allah.

And I look forward to the book.

I embraced Islam 15 years ago and will say the first few years are very challenging. I literally went from someone who solely focused on the outer shell and mechanics of worship to someone who later realized that there are differences of opinions AND your intention is very important. Some of the opinions you encountered we’re definately outside the box in a very bad way. As funny as it sounds – listen to your gut…. I often find myself saying ” would the prophet (PBUH) do this?”.

Unfortunately society, money, along with other things influence mankind, not just Muslims. Remember that we should be on the middle path and stick to the obligatory. May Allah give us success!

Other than the fact that I absolutely HATE it when us converts are referred to as “reverts” either by born-Muslims or other converts themselves, I nonetheless thought this entry was a good, well-written one, though, by now, I’m not at all surprise with the author’s encounters. I happen to be from the South and what he observed isn’t solely relegated to the South; it’s unfortunately more ubiquitous than many Muslims would care to admit. I’m a relatively new Muslim myself – perhaps of the same make and caliber as the author, save without the dreads – and I’ve had similar experiences…and some worse ones even.

It’s good to keep alive the child-like naiveté and the hopes and dreams of a REAL community where Muslims actually guard each other backs regardless of race, class, gender, or cultural instead of stabbing each other in them for petty issues as I have seen. In any case, the journey is always more important than the destination…and as I can tell – and God surely knows better – us Muslims have quite the journey cut out for us…

good article bro!!! yes, we do find muslims totally differing from the ways of prophet saw’s tradition.
But hopefully it shouldnt stop us from striving to be gud muslims. We cannot change others but we can possibly lead an islamic life, be gud example and influence other people around us, in sha allah.
