Jazak Allah for the remainder Sister Summayah. Without getting into an argument here of whether music is haram or halal, I occasionally listen to classical music on YouTube. After reading this, I was persuaded to take out a monthly subscription to Rhapsody, where I can listen 100% legally. $15 a month is a small price to pay to remain honest.

what is accepted public discourse is a matter of historical narrative. no historical narrative can be told exclusive of the dominant discourse that shapes it. in the post-colonial discourse of ethics there is a clearly defined space between what is useful and legit (Benthamite utilitarianism) in contravention to what is practiced yet erroneous (such as common sense). the power and agency of the post-colonial nation-state carries the transitive narrative of its colonial precursor which shaped every memory of its indigenous or vernacular space. any poetry, piece of history, archaeological artifact or stony evidence of science carries the narrative of a historical truth that is deemed knowable and valid in that dominant discourse. if the discourse is post-modernism, it is likely to discard all or every possible ways of truth as relative and thus offers only a method of deconstructionism. post-colonial historical narrative is the history of modernism, progress and the nation-state that had been socially and culturally constructed in all our textual, verbal and discursive memories. It has been done by creating a spatial "difference" of ethical behaviour between the libertarian values of its egalitarian project and its painful exercise of modernity.

A discourse analysis of Colonial history reveals how a concept of provincialism was applied in all our domestic, communal and personal spaces to demarcate between our public and private consciousness. the provincial space was deemed crowded, lacked necessary temperament for learning, disorganized, secluded, whereas the metropolitan space had precise, symetrical and "proper" bounderies of space, learning and aesthetics. the notions of timeliness, orderliness and fitness had been storied in the narrative of development from the way a school should run to how wars had to be conducted. There are studies which even problematises the feministic (inferior) character of the sites of knowledge production and the inability to think through (rationally). The conflict of development becomes a problem of education, which in a liberal sense undermines the ability of the colonized spaces (family, school, community) to overcome its narrative of incompleteness and deficiencies. the mother, teacher or jurist in the modern state essentializes the growth of the child, student or citizen by playing into the narrative of historical truths. pedagogical violence starts with the knowledge that there are two types of knowledge: worldy, and real; and that proper knowledge or behaviour (that is essential for modernity) does not make him more happier than the other child, because they are different in their experiences of pain.
