That laypeople or even students of religion are prone to it, is something I can understand. But that scientifically trained academics don’t get it either, is unacceptable. Because this concept is nothing more and nothing less than measurement. There is an objective thing – i.e. the truth – but human beings can only grasp it by measuring it, trying to come as close as possible. Everybody is trying to come as close as we can. So what different schools are debating is really over whose method is more likely to yield closest results, and whether the method is correctly being applied.

Within the range of non-disqualified methods, nobody can be 100% sure that their choice is certainly ‘the one’, because only God actually grasps truth, and is able to see which ones come closest. The people measuring, cannot know which of them is actually closest given that *everybody* is measuring from somewhere other than the truth, and *nobody* starts from already sitting on the truth (of course science measuring can use some statistics to try and guess, but higher truths are not amenable to this).

It’s all about your intention. If your goal is to please Allah(swt), walking an extra mile is a privilege, you look forward to opportunities to please Allah, preferring Allah’s blessing over conveniences or doing the least you can get away with. Choose to engage in what’s halal, discard what’s haram and stay away from what’s doubtful.

This multiplicity has to be expressed delicately with many Muslims. I learned the hard way that even suggesting the scope of not just 7, but even 10 qiraa’ah is enough to get people jumping all over me accusing me of confusing people and getting me branded as a “zindeeq”, a “Mu’tazilaite”, and plenty of other names. (Freakin’ really? 1,000 years later and people still get ants in their pants over Mu’tzalilism??) The fact that our scholars deal with multiplicity and ambiguity every day means nothing to the monolithic political Muslims who insist on oneness for everything. And, woe to the the poor ones who only wanted some solid certainty without the inconveniences of many truths; their heads practically explode in front of your eyes…
