A friend in Alexandria related this to me:
One day while sitting at the school in which I take Islamic studies classes, my teacher introduced me to an Egyptian girl that memorizes Qur’an there. I remember thinking how shy and timid the girl seemed. After the girl left, my teacher revealed that she is both deaf and mute. I was both amazed and puzzled. I asked, “Well then, how does she memorize/recite the Qur’an with tajweed?” My teacher smiled and stated, “By reading lips.”
SubhanAllah walhamdulillah wa laa ilaaha illallaah wallahu Akbar! Glory be to Allah, all praise belongs to Him, He is the One God, and He is Great!
And so the question remains: What’s your excuse?
alhamduliallah for all the blessings He gives us
SubhanAllah, every once in a while a story like this comes along and wakes us up to what’s important in life and how fortunate we are.
Thank you very much for a fantastic post.
I have no excuse; I thought of you even.. a white 17 year old from hood and now a Alim with masters from Alazhar… But I’m too lazy… and I don’t get arabic… it doesn’t flow like english. one word is attached to the next; i’m smoker so I’m out of breath… I try to read the transliteration. I am very weak, and my iman right now is the lowest its ever been. And its not that I don’t believe; just stuck in rut and not feeling the energy to get out… laziness and procrastination are my refugee now. I pray for guidance to help me defeat those but so far… Its easy to believe; its damn hard to do. My hat of f to that girl and you Br. Shuaib.
Assallamu Alykum brother Mike:
Forgive me, but if I may…can I offer a suggestion, it’s really simple. When out walking (anywhere actually) try to remember Allah. Just say “Subhan Allah” as you’re walking. Say it as many times as you wish. After a bit, try something else, say “alhamduliallah.” After that try “Allahu Akbar.”
Remember Him when you’re out walking or if you’re waiting on a line for something, or on the train or driving your car. Anywhere when you have some down time…use it to remember Him.
I promise you…He will remember you insha’ Allah.
Again, forgive me for assuming anything or offering my thoughts.
I asked my friend if the sister reads from the mushaf and she said she does, and when she reads to her teacher, she “mouths” the ayaat and her teacher can correct her mistakes in pronunciation just by looking at her mouth. SubhanAllah!
Subhanallah! you just helped me make a decision I’ve been making istikhara on. Jazakhallah Khair for that 🙂
SubhanAllah….Thanks for sharing
mashallah i hearing this story motivates to learn the quran. I am a born muslim i never learnt how to read quran. I am 19years old i feel like its late for me to read. Make dua 4me
Dua is my religious obligation, Action is my necessity, Struggle is obligatory and my Motivation is from The-Qur’an. So we make Dua for you but you must follow Action, Struggle and get motivated so that Dua reflects upon you.
It’s never a wrong time to do the right thing. Please start and Allah will definitely help you and us all, inshaallah.
This is what I tried when I was at peak of my laziness, heights of procrastination and aloofness with Quran.
I started reading Scientific facts mentioned in Quran, and that got me very curious. Started reading one Ayat per day with English transliteration.
All praise due to Allah, he helped me read Quran with all my love now.
If i’m not wrong, the great Imam Abu Hanifa, started his religious studies when he was 20.
so you still have one more year. 😉
Subhan Allah ………….!! may Allah S.W.T give all we muslims the hidayat to recite Qoran sharif everyday even if its a single Ayat but with intensity and understanding and follow upon it … and forgive our sins … ameen ………….
asalaam alaikum warahmat ALLAH-
as a mom of an 8 year old who is deaf- she wears a cochlear implant and hearing aid, this article is certainly inspiring..mashaAllah tabarakAllah. Allah certainly makes Quran easy for those who are sincere.
jazakAllah kheir for sharing.
This is eye opening to those who have perfect ears, tongue and eyes but not using the gifts of Almighty Alloh the way deaf and mute girl used it to Glorify His Almighty. Almighty Alloh conveyes the examples and guides those who recognize the message through such examples as that of this daughter who is deaf and mute. One must understand that those who struggle to establish the religion have much more reward than those who are blessed with all they need to establish the religion easily. In order to please Almighty Alloh, struggle with those matters which require more efforts by you beside maintaining and continuing what you perform at ease (Jazak Alloh).
It is never too late to learn the Quran. Please do not late anything deter you from learning the deen at any time or age. 🙂
