Qur'an Reflections Youth

Cell Phones vs. Qur’an

By Umm AbdelRahman Murphy

I wonder what would happen if we were to treat the Qur’an the same way that we treat our cell phones.

What if..
…we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
…we made sure to go back to get it if we forgot it?
…we flipped through it several times a day?
…we used it to receive messages from the text?
…we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
…we gave it to our kids as gifts?
…we used it as we traveled?
…we used it in cases of emergencies?

Hopefully this short reminder makes us stop and think, “Where is my Qur’an?” Remember to use your time in Ramadan for Qur’an, insha’Allah (God willing)!

  • Asalamualaikum wrt wb,

Actually, there are several nice Quran programs you can download on to your Nokia, just an example http://www.PocketQuran.com , is the one I have . Here in Shaam the programs are practically free, just about any phone shop has them. It is a must have for a person memorizing Quran, or any student of knoweldge, to help recall ayats at the flip of a button, or make use of your time waiting in line.

See, cell phones aren’t that bad after all 🙂

  • I don’t think she was bashing cell phones, just saying we should give the Qur’an the same treatment (better, actually) than we give our phones :-).

I think she was talking about me, actually :-P. Sorry, momma.

  • Jzkheri sister for the reminder.

I wish we did and I wish I treated it even better that the cell phone. It is true for most of us when we step out and forget our cell phone we make a U-turn to come get it. Or we make sure it’s fully charged before we leave our houses. Yet sometime we don’t even think “where will a be when its time for salah ? Am I going to be able to make wudhu or have a place to pray or a mat to pray on?” before we run out of the house.

May Allah swt reward you since this is definitely something to consider.

I remember it was a year ago when I read another reminder similar to this where the writer mentioned that “what if you have your quran handy and instead of grabbing that magazine that we always go for when we are sited in most of the waiting room, we instead read our Quran?”. Imagine the benefits, the massive reward that comes with it not forgetting the shield.

2:185…..sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong)
7:204 When the Qur’an is read, listen to it with attention, and hold your peace: that ye may receive Mercy.
12:2 We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an, in order that ye may learn wisdom.
15:1 A. L. R. These are the Ayats of Revelation,- of a Qur’an that makes things clear.
    17:9 Verily this Qur’an doth guide to that which is most right (or stable), and giveth the Glad Tidings to the Believers who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a magnificent reward;
17:45 When thou dost recite the Qur’an, We put, between thee and those who believe not in the Hereafter, a veil invisible:
17:82 We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss
17:88 Say: “If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support.
17:89 And We have explained to man, in this Qur’an, every kind of similitude: yet the greater part of men refuse (to receive it) except with ingratitude!

20:2 We have not sent down the Qur’an to thee to be (an occasion) for thy distress,
20:113 Thus have We sent this down – an arabic Qur’an – and explained therein in detail some of the warnings, in order that they may fear Allah, or that it may cause their remembrance (of Him).
    27:1 These are verses of the Qur’an,-a book that makes (things) clear;

    85:21 Nay, this is a Glorious Qur’an,
56:77 That this is indeed a qur’an Most Honorable.

May Allah swt reward you sister.

  • Today at Taraweeh, I saw a few young sisters texting during the middle of Salah. I hope this is not backbiting, but it really saddened my heart. It made me realize to what extent we disrespect the Qur’an sometimes…

  • Hehe, I wonder if we are allowed to have the Qura’an in our purses when we enter the bathroom? I often wonder about this 😉
But most definitly an awesome reminder Barak Allahu fiki 🙂

Alhamdulilah about a year ago or two I bought myself a long awaited ipod. My father was a bit hesitant that I would put more non-useful audio … but Alhamdulilah I have downloaded the Qura’an, some du`aa’s, and another favorite, lectures!!

While driving, I’m memorizing from the Qura’an, when I’m stuck waiting, I listen to a lecture. That way I’m in constantly being reminded of Allah swt, always learning something new walhamdulilah.

Sorry for going off tangent but some how I cant “go without my ipod” 😉 hehe. Alhamdulilah

  • I DID NOT SEEK PERMISSION BEFORE PRINTING IT AND POSTED IT AT THE NOTICE BOARD
IN MY SCHOOL. BUT I'M SURE U WOULD'NT MIND. NOT LONG AFTER THAT I HEARD A FEW
TEACHERS WERE TALKING ABOUT IT. WELL, I PRAY ALLAH WILL BLESS EVERY WORD AND BLESSED
YOU FOR THOSE 'PAINFUL BUT THE TRUTH' WORDS.

  • another thing, do you have any thing like this about what if, rasullullah pay u a visit
at home right now. i read it a few years ago but forgotten to keep it. it;s as if, rasullallah drop by at your
place while you are, you know, doing all sorts of thing people do right now. tv, playing, goofing about…
i remember the writer in a melancholic way mentioning what would rasulallah say if he catch you with yr
girlfriend right now, when it almost maghrib prayers…. what do think he would say. if what i mentioned is
wrong or sin, (to imagine Rasulallah) i'm very sorry… it;s just a thought.

  • MasyaAllah! =)

Yes, i got 2 Quran applications in my cell phone. One with translation.

I carried it all around. We Muslims need to utilized with technologies.

    JazakaAllah.

  • I’ve wondered too about taking a digital version of the Quran into the bathroom. A scholarly friend of mine told me that you can think of the digital Quran as a kind of translation so it is not subject to the same restrictions as a mushaf. So it can go into the bathroom and it can be accessed without wudu. And Allah knows best.

  • Here´s the answers your waiting for:

You would be wondering why nobody´s getting in touch with you anymore.
    You would surely waste time.
You would get bored – several times a day.
you would surely look like a lunatic.
    see above.
Our kids would start hating us for giving them a stupid old book instead of a super cool cell phone.
Planes possibly wouldn´t launch becuse of the fear of becoming flying bombs. (perhaps?)
Well, I´d recommend you to try it on burning persons. Maybe it catches fire as well.
